Can a cell have a soul?

jerry submitted, created time 6 months 5 days (www.bmj.com)

Because there are challenging debates between those who argue that all research involving embryonic stem cells is immoral and those who see immense medical potential in this area of research, I have decided to include this article.

This study found that medical need dictates that the origin of human individuality must be defined with similar pragmatic precision. So a cell cannot have a soul.

Is it mean the activities of a cell are spontaneous without consciousness?

This article agree with the pragmatic use of cell.
I'm affraid they haven't talked about the consciousness of cells. They just wanted to tell us why we need to use embryonic cell and how to use it correctly.

Jerry, you left out this guy's entire argument! He doesn't just say "a cell cannot have a soul" as if he were pulling the conclusion out of the air. He was using the old twin argument. He says that, because an embryo does't pass the point where it can split and form two or more people instead of one until fourteen days, then it must not have its soul until at least then.

This isn't a new argument. Right or wrong, it does not satisfy opponents of stem cell research.
