Drugs turn "couch potato" mice into long-distance runners

sea-maid submitted, created time 3 months 2 weeks (www.nature.com)

In a study published today in the journal Cell, scientists say they have found the first targeted drugs that boost endurance. They are already working with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to develop tests to expose would-be cheats who use the drugs.

"Evans hopes that the drugs will be used to improve the health of people who can’t exercise, such as the bedridden or very obese."

That's good... But this also has military applications.

We're used to thinking of steroids when we think of muscle-enhancing drugs. Steroids have a host of side effects, including side effects that cause anger and other undesirable behavior. For this reason, we associate muscle-enhancing drugs with cheaters and violent people.

But if this enzyme can trigger muscle growth WITHOUT causing long-term damage to the body and any-term damage to the mind, then why wouldn't soldiers and athletes and ordinary people all want it? Why not take it regularly, like vitamins? There probably are side effects that we don't know about yet, but what if there aren't?
