kavin submitted, created time 5 months 2 days (www.medscape.com)

June 19, 2008 (Washington, DC) — A nationwide survey in France has found five factors that are significantly associated with successful weight loss after gastric banding. The study was part of a survey of medical and surgical practices conducted by the French National Medical Insurance Service and presented here at the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery 25th Annual Meeting. "Success" was defined as the loss of more than 50% of excess body weight.

The survey investigated 15 factors potentially associated with successful weight loss. Univariate analysis identified 5 of these factors as "predictive factors of success." The 5 factors were age, initial body mass index (BMI), changing eating habits, restarting physical activity, and the experience of the surgical team.Success was significantly associated with patient's age being younger than 40 years (P < .01), initial BMI less than 50 kg/m2 (P < .001), change in eating habits (P < .001), restarting physical activity (P < .001), and a surgical team that performs more than 2 bariatric procedures per week (P < .01).
