Fuel cells gearing up to power auto industry

The average price for all types of gasoline is holding steady around $2.95 per gallon nationwide, but the pain at the pump might be short-lived as research from the University of Houston may eliminate one of the biggest hurdles to the wide-scale production of fuel cell-powered vehicles.

A fuel cell is powerful. It can convert energy into electricity with very high efficiencies without combustion, flame, noise or vibration.

Yes, but is it really a suitable replacement for gasoline? Even if we lay aside hydrogen fires during car crashes, how would we keep the hydrogen from escaping?

What my alter-ego is saying is that we might still end up having lots of wars over resources, but we'd be having them over platinum mines instead of oil wells. Still, we should give it a go. The Middle East deserves a break.
