Radiotherapy Error Could Affect Hundreds

bioman submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.examiner.com)

Hundreds of brain cancer patients in France and perhaps others in the United States may be contacted about their radiation treatments from malfunctioning machines, which were ordered shut down by the French government after a manufacturer's warning. The maker of the equipment, Brainlab of Munich, Germany, downplayed the risks and the company's founder said it involved a small targeting error that was unlikely to cause problems for patients.

World first test potential to identify breast cancer patients who will react badly to radiotherapy

cappuccion submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.eurekalert.org)

Medical scientists at the University of Leicester have announced a potentially unique advance in breast cancer research by identifying two genes associated with adverse reaction to cancer treatment. The research could mean people who might react badly to radiotherapy could be warned in advance or alternative treatments be sought. There is no test at present for an abnormal reaction to radiotherapy. No-one in the past has proposed such a test.

Radiotherapy for Glioblastoma in the Elderly

collapsar submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (content.nejm.org)

"There is no community standard for the treatment of glioblastoma in patients 70 years of age or older. We conducted a randomized trial that compared radiotherapy and supportive care with supportive care alone in such patients. Patients 70 years of age or older with a newly diagnosed anaplastic astrocytoma or glioblastoma and a Karnofsky performance score of 70 or higher were randomly assigned to receive supportive care only or supportive care plus radiotherapy (focal radiation in daily fractions of 1.8 Gy given 5 days per week, for a total dose of 50 Gy)

Randomized Controlled Trial of Resection Versus Radiotherapy After Induction Chemotherapy in Stage IIIA-N2 Non–Small-Cell Lung Cancer

addict submitted, created time 1 year 9 months (jnci.oxfordjournals.org)

Induction chemotherapy before surgical resection increases survival compared with surgical resection alone in patients with stage IIIA-N2 non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Maybe following a response to induction chemotherapy, surgical resection would be superior to thoracic radiotherapy as locoregional therapy. In selected patients with pathologically proven stage IIIA-N2 NSCLC and a response to induction chemotherapy, surgical resection did not improve overall or progression-free survival compared with radiotherapy

Radiotherapy was harmful to left breast cancer patients

Rhett submitted, created time 1 year 10 months (caonline.amcancersoc.org)

Women treated with radiotherapy for cancer of the left breast are more likely to develop cardiac disease years later than women whose right breast was irradiated.
As far as I am concerned, the radiotherapy and Chemotherapy were also risky treatment for cancer patients. But as far there were no other effective methods for it. If the molecular therapy could be realized, the radiotherapy and chemotherapy would be decreased
