The SPI-2 type III secretion system restricts motility of Salmonella-containing vacuoles

Eric wu submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (www.discover8.com)

Intracellular replication of Salmonella enterica occurs in membrane-bound compartments, called Salmonella-containing vacuoles (SCVs). Following invasion of epithelial cells, most SCVs migrate to a perinuclear region and replicate in close association with the Golgi network. The association of SCVs with the Golgi is dependent on the Salmonella-pathogenicity island-2 (SPI-2) type III secretion system (T3SS) effectors SseG, SseF and SifA. However, little is known about the dynamics of SCV movement

Attenuated Salmonella engineered to produce human cytokine LIGHT inhibit tumor growth

sumsung submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (www.pnas.org)

Intravenously administered bacteria reportedly accumulate in tumors. Furthermore, systemic administration of attenuated Salmonella typhimurium has little or no significant side-effects in humans.

Fighting Cancer With Salmonella

diggman submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.sciencedaily.com)

Disease-causing bacteria can help in the fight against cancer. This may sound a little far-fetched at first, but in future bacteria could form the basis for innovative tumor therapies. Researchers at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig have succeeded in planting "remote-controlled" salmonella in the tumors of cancer-bearing mice. The genetically modified microbes can produce substances on command. "Perhaps at some point," hopes Helmholtz scientist Dr

Easter worry: CDC cites salmonella threat from chicks

channel submitted, created time 1 year 9 months (www.cnn.com)

hree salmonella outbreaks among people who had come in contact with baby chicks and other birds, sometimes given to children as springtime pets, made 81 people ill last year.Although baby birds such as chicks and ducklings might not appear dirty, they can have feces on their feathers and beaks, areas that children are more likely to touch or place in their mouths, possibly resulting in infection. And the CDCs advise that children under age 5 should not be permitted to handle baby birds.

Salmonella survives better in stomach due to altered DNA

Rhett submitted, created time 1 year 11 months (www.nwo.nl)

People were harassed by stomach ache for many years, which was caused by the Salmonella. Certain kinds of Salmonella can survives better in stomach, and researchers found that better survival was due to the new genetic information. Dutch researcher Armand Hermans found new genetic information in DNA of Salmonella serovar Typhimurium DT104 that might be involved in its survival and infection mechanism. The new DNA fragment can make the pathogen stronger and more infectious.

The resistance of Salmonella raised during its evolution
