Drug-resistant tuberculosis is on the rise in much of the world, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report released yesterday. The WHO estimates that of the 9 million new cases of tuberculosis each year, about 5% are resistant to the standard treatment

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) released new statistics on the global prevalence of HIV and AIDS on 20 November. Their new report estimates that 33.2 million people worldwide are infected with HIV; in 2006 the estimate was 39.5 million.
According to the report, the 16% reduction in the estimate is the result of better data and better epidemiological interpretation of those data, particularly in India.
