Men who take aspirin have significantly lower PSA levels

sea-maid submitted, created time 5 days 19 hours (www.genengnews.com)

The use of aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is significantly associated with lower PSA levels, especially among men with prostate cancer, say researchers at Vanderbilt University.

Walnut trees emit aspirin-like chemical to deal with stress

sea-maid submitted, created time 2 months 2 days (esciencenews.com)

Scientists have known for some time that plants can produce their own stress-killers--aspirin is famously produced in willow and walnut trees--but now they've been able to confirm that these compounds are released into the surrounding atmosphere in significant quantities.

Pain relievers may complicate prostate screening

jerry submitted, created time 2 months 2 weeks (www.reuters.com)

Taking a popular class of pain relievers that includes aspirin and ibuprofen lowers the levels of a protein in a man's blood that doctors use to screen for prostate cancer, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

Blood thinners like aspirin may help fight cancer

sumsung submitted, created time 8 months 1 week (www.reuters.com)

Blood-thinning drugs such as aspirin may help fight cancer by denying shelter to wandering tumor cells, U.S. researchers reported on Friday. Experiments in mice showed that combining aspirin with an experimental anti-clotting drug slowed the growth and spread of breast and melanoma tumors.

Aspirin, COX-2, and the Risk of Colorectal Cancer

jiangyun submitted, created time 1 year 2 months (content.nejm.org)

Chan et al. (May 24 issue)evaluated the influence of aspirin on the risk of colorectal cancer according to the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in the resected tumors and found a significantly reduced risk of colorectal cancers with overexpression of COX-2. We offer an alternative interpretation of the data.

Association of Aspirin and Nonaspirin Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs With Cancer Incidence and Mortality

channel submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (jnci.oxfordjournals.org)

The cancer chemopreventive benefits of aspirin and nonaspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are incompletely defined and may vary by smoking history. We evaluated associations between aspirin and nonaspirin NSAID use with cancer incidence and mortality stratified by smoking history in the Iowa Women's Health Study, a prospective cohort of postmenopausal women. Aspirin use, but not nonaspirin NSAID use, was associated with lower risks of cancer incidence and mortality, which was more pronounced among former and never smokers than current smokers.

Aspirin and the Risk of Colorectal Cancer in Relation to the Expression of COX-2

penguin submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (content.nejm.org)

Regular use of aspirin reduces the risk of a colorectal neoplasm, but the mechanism by which aspirin affects carcinogenesis in the colon is not well understood. We estimated cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression by immunohistochemical assay of sections from paraffin-embedded colorectal-cancer specimens from two large cohorts of participants who provided data on aspirin use from a questionnaire every 2 years. We applied Cox regression to a competing-risks analysis to compare the effects of aspirin use on the relative risk of colorectal cancer in relation to the expression of COX-2 in the tumor

Aspirin's anti-cancer power worth risk for some

amanda submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.msnbc.msn.com)

"Long-term use of aspirin may be a cheap, effective way of warding off colorectal cancer for people who are at high risk, but bleeding risks make it a bad idea for the average patient, researchers said on Thursday."

Aspirin may be less effective heart treatment for women than men

A new study shows that aspirin therapy for coronary artery disease is four times more likely to be ineffective in women compared to men with the same medical history.

Long-term Aspirin Use and Mortality in Women

alpha submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (archinte.ama-assn.org)

"In women, low to moderate doses of aspirin are associated with significantly lower risk of all-cause mortality, particularly in older women and those with cardiac risk factors. A significant benefit is evident within 5 years for cardiovascular disease, whereas a modest benefit for cancer is not apparent until after 10 years of use. "

Aspirin benefits older women, but talk to doctor first

addict submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.nature.com)

Aspirin in low to moderate doses may lower the risk of death in women, particularly those who are older and prone to heart disease, a 24-year study of nearly 80,000 women suggests. However, experts cautioned that the results are not definitive and that women should not take aspirin as a health preventive without talking to their doctor. A new study shows aspirin may help healthy women, many doctors advise people who've had heart attacks and strokes to take a daily 81-milligram baby aspirin, costing less than 50 cents a week.
