Biotechnology: Can hydrogels solve our water problem?
Darkfrog submitted, created time 2 months 1 week (www.nature.com)
I remember reading BIll Bryson's description of a pre-blight American chestnut tree. When he came to the transpiration of water, he said, "imagine how much metal and noise humans would have to use to move that many gallons water."
Well artificial water transport just got a bit quieter, even if it can't match the chestnut just yet. A tiny microtree made from the same type of gel used to make contact lenses has mimicked water transport in plants. Scientists say that it could be used to extract water in dry places or make more efficient cooling systems

Biotechnology for Biofuels is an open access, peer-reviewed online journal featuring high-quality studies describing technological and operational advances in the production of biofuels from biomass. The journal will emphasize understanding and advancing the application of biotechnology and synergistic operations to improve plants and biological conversion systems for the production of fuels from lignocellulosic biomass and any related economic, environmental and policy issues.

NY Times Comments on Nature Genetics Article
Darkfrog submitted, created time 1 year 4 months (www.nytimes.com)
This is a plain-language discussion of one of the problems facing the biotechnology industry -- the fact that genes are not discrete units but rather act in networks.

Researchers develop technique for bacteria crowd control
fiona submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.biologynews.net)
"A surprising technique to concentrate, manipulate, and separate a wide class of swimming bacteria has been identified through a collaboration between researchers at Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois Institute of technology, University of Arizona at Tucson, and Cambridge University, UK. This device could have enormous applications in biotechnology and biomedical engineering including use in miniaturized medical diagnostic kits and bioanalysis.“
