Rhesus protein stops blood from becoming acidic

sea-maid submitted, created time 1 day 20 hours (www.nature.com)

A protein similar to the Rhesus factor antigens that are used to determine the safety of blood transfusions removes acid from the blood and could have a role in regulating pH elsewhere in the body, too

Tumor Secrets Written in Blood

piggy submitted, created time 3 days 16 hours (sciencenow.sciencemag.org)

Doctors may soon be able to use blood tests rather than invasive biopsies to figure out what type of brain tumors their patients have. The findings, which come thanks to new insights about how tumor cells communicate with their environment, may also bring physicians closer to the goal of more personalized medicine.

Cells are chatty, constantly exchanging proteins or electrical signals with their neighbors. For example, tumor cells can signal nearby blood vessels to grow in their direction, thereby facilitating tumor growth

"Bad egg" gas controls blood flow

sea-maid submitted, created time 3 weeks 5 days (www.nature.com)

As the smell of rotten eggs wafts past your nostrils, you're more likely to be revulsed than relaxed. Yet researchers have now shown that the "bad egg" gas, hydrogen sulfide, is produced in certain animal cells and acts as a muscle relaxant to regulate blood pressure.

Red blood cells generated from human embryonic stem cells may transfuse some life into Advanced Cell Technology

sea-maid submitted, created time 2 months 3 weeks (www.nature.com)

Observers could be forgiven for thinking they had spotted a phoenix rising from the ashes of Advanced Cell Technology (ACT) earlier this week. The Los Angeles, California-based company, which is devoted to turning human embryonic stem cells into therapies, had been reported on the verge of extinction last month after it told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it would run out of money on 31 July

No Substitute for Real Blood

sumsung submitted, created time 6 months 3 weeks (sciencenow.sciencemag.org)

A team of clinical trial specialists and consumer advocates has concluded that blood substitutes increase death rates by 30% and nearly triple the risk of heart attacks. Not everyone buys the findings, however, and clinical trials in the field continue.

S-nitrosohemoglobin deficiency: A mechanism for loss of physiological activity in banked blood

george submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (www.pnas.org)

RBCs distribute oxygen to tissues, but, paradoxically, blood transfusion does not always improve oxygen delivery and is associated with ischemic events. We hypothesized that storage of blood would result in loss of NO bioactivity, impairing RBC vasodilation and thus compromising blood flow, and that repleting NO bioactivity would restore RBC function.

MIT scholars discover key blood protein

Hecate submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (www.eurekalert.org)

Ah, some blood-based news just weeks before Halloween. It seems that a team led by Dr. Jane-Jane Chen of MIT has uncovered a protein, nicknamed HRI for short, that regulates the body's iron recycling system. This may have consequences for people suffering from protoporphyria.

(You will have to click into the article for the full name. This is good news, but I don't want to give myself carpal tunnel syndrome for it.)

Folic acid lowers blood arsenic levels in Bangladesh

zibba submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (www.eurekalert.org)

A new study conducted in Bangladesh finds that folic acid supplements can dramatically lower blood arsenic levels in individuals chronically exposed to arsenic-contaminated drinking water. Arsenic is a toxic element that is naturally present in some soils and water. Arsenic-contaminated drinking water is currently a significant public health problem in at least 70 countries, including several developing countries and also parts of the US.

Folic acid lowers blood arsenic levels, according to Mailman School of Public Health study

davis submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (www.eurekalert.org)

A new study by researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health finds that folic acid supplements can dramatically lower blood arsenic levels in individuals exposed to arsenic through contaminated drinking water. This toxic element is currently a significant public health problem in at least 70 countries. Chronic arsenic exposure is associated with increased risk for skin, liver and bladder cancers, skin lesions, cardiovascular disease, and other adverse health outcomes.

Rotavirus can spread beyond the intestine

fiona submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.biologynews.net)

"A new study in PLoS Medicine has shown that children who have rotavirus, a very common cause of diarrhea in children, and who have antigens (protein fragments from the surface of the virus) in their blood, also have infectious virus in their blood. Margaret Conner and colleagues from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Texas, tested samples obtained from hospitalized children with gastroenteritis and compared them with samples taken from children admitted with bronchiolitis or noninfectious, nonchronic conditions and healthy adults."
