Calcium May Only Protect Against Colorectal Cancer in Presence of Magnesium
sea-maid submitted, created time 3 days 17 hours (www.sciencedaily.com)
High magnesium intake has been associated with low risk of colorectal cancer. Americans have similar average magnesium intake as East Asian populations. If that were all that were involved, observers might expect both groups to have similar risk for colorectal cancer

Gene Variations Alter Risk of Esophageal Cancer
piggy submitted, created time 2 weeks 1 day (www.sciencedaily.com)
ScienceDaily (Nov. 6, 2008) — Variations in a common gene pathway may affect esophageal cancer risk, a dangerous and rapidly increasing type of cancer, according to research by scientists at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Results of the study, which is the first to look at the association between variations in genes related to microRNAs (miRNAs) and esophageal cancer, are published in the November issue of Cancer Prevention Research, a journal of the American Association of Cancer Research.

Much has been learned about the potential of the immune system to control cancer and the various ways that immunotherapy can boost the potential of the immune system for the benefit of the patient. This knowledge has stimulated the invention of many new therapeutic antibodies, cell-based treatments, and vaccines, which are starting to be used in clinical practice, either alone or in various combinations. These new therapies are expected to result in improved cancer treatment and, eventually, the prevention of cancer.

Fatalistic beliefs about cancer cause many to ignore cancer prevention advice
claudia submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.eurekalert.org)
If you feel that you are fated for cancer, your belief could turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy. According to a national survey of more than 6,000 U.S. adults published in the May issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a substantial number of American adults hold fatalistic beliefs about cancer and are correspondingly less likely to take basic steps to lower their cancer risk, such as exercising, quitting smoking and eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

New Gene Discovery on Pancreatic Cancer
annatto submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.nlm.nih.gov)
In research with mice published in the March 12 issue of Cancer Cell, U.S. researchers have identified that a specific sequence of otherwise common genetic mutations causes cystic ductal pancreatic cancer.

Never escape :Childhood cancer survivors still at higher risk of cancer .
Reviver submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.sciam.com)
By studying the files of 14,372 participants of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study. scientists identified 108 patients with cancer of the connective tissue, also known as sarcoma, that was diagnosed an average of 11 years after their original cancer diagnosis. Their risk of sarcoma was more than nine-fold higher than individuals in the general population.

A good list of known CARCINOGENS
technology submitted, created time 1 year 9 months (www.scorecard.org)
Many chemicals are capable of inducing cancer in humans or animals after prolonged or excessive exposure. Here is a good reference to known chemical carcinogens.

New cancer treatments will come
annatto submitted, created time 1 year 9 months (www.sciencedaily.com)
researchers say they have discovered a new method of controlling cell growth, possibly leading to new targets for cancer treatments. This discovery not only adds to our basic understanding of cell division, it could lead to better cancer drugs. Since cell growth is a fundamental biological process.

Prognostic implications of immunohistochemically detected YKL-40 expression in breast cancer
Cassidy submitted, created time 1 year 9 months (www.wjso.com)
YKL-40 has been implicated as a mediator of collagen synthesis and extracellular matrix re-modeling as well as mitogenesis. Elevated serum levels of YKL-40 have been associated with worse survival in a variety of malignancies including breast cancer. It was found YKL-40 immunoreactivity significantly correlated with larger tumor size, poorer tumor differentiation, and a greater likelihood of being estrogen and/or progesterone receptor negative. Immunoreactivity for YKL-40 was a significant predictor of breast cancer relapse in this subset of patients
