Lung cancer screening: the way forward

sea-maid submitted, created time 3 months 5 days (www.nature.com)

To take lung cancer screening into national programs, we first have to answer the question whether low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening and treatment of early lesions will decrease lung cancer mortality compared with a control group, to accurately estimate the balance of benefits and harms, and to determine the cost-effectiveness of the intervention.

Embryonic stem cells answer questions about breast cancer

sea-maid submitted, created time 3 months 4 weeks (www.nature.com)

Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes dramatically increase a woman's risk of breast cancer, and some women consider genetic screening in the hopes of earlier detection and treatment. Commercial tests can detect common variants associated with risk, but many mutations are unclassified

New Colon Cancer Screening Recommendations

DanyC submitted, created time 8 months 2 weeks (health.usnews.com)

Two tests are now being recommended: the virtual colonoscopy, which is an external CT scan that visualizes the colon without snaking a tube into it, and a stool test that detects mutated DNA shed from tumors. Those join the previously recommended screening tests, which include colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy (in which a flexible tube is inserted in the rectum but not as far into the large bowel as with a colonoscopy), and different varieties of stool tests.

PS;
Colon cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the U.S. It is the 2nd most frequently diagnosed disease in the U.S

Twins, one with leukemia, illustrate cancer stem cell hypothesis

Darkfrog submitted, created time 10 months 3 days (www.nature.com)

Cancer stem cell hypothesis is the idea that some cancers, including leukemia, are caused by a small number of cancer stem cells. Even if the majority of the tumor is removed of zapped with chemo, the cancer will recur unless the cancer stem cells are dispatched.

The twin girls in this study are fraternal, not identical, and one of them has leukemia and the other does not. However, a group of cells in the healthy girl, Isabella, seemed to match the ill girl, Olivia, implying that they were transferred to her while the two of them were developing. Some of these cells were removed

PROSTATE SCREENING HIGH AMONG ELDERLY, ILL MEN

diggman submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (caonline.amcancersoc.org)

A substantial number of elderly men are getting screened for prostate cancer unnecessarily, researchers said. The balance of benefit to harm associated with early detection and treatment of prostate cancer shifts substantially with age and comorbidity. The complications and side effects of treatment generally occur immediately or within a couple of years, but the benefits to survival become significant many years later
