Unlike earlier techniques used in Japan, which involved growing cells on a scaffold that slowly dissolved after implantation, scientists in Argentina grew whole stretches of blood vessel from the patients' own cells. The patients in question have damaged veins and arteries in their arms from regular dialysis.
This does not involve stem cells of any kind. A strip of skin is removed from the patient, but the fibroblast and endothelial cells are taken from the inside of the veins in that strip of skin

Recently, TWIST, a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, is suggested to be an oncogene because of its overexpression in many types of human cancer and its positive role in promoting cell survival. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of TWIST on the growth of human epithelial cells.

"Ciliated epithelial cells have the unique ability to generate hundreds of centrioles during differentiation. We used centrosomal proteins as molecular markers in cultured mouse tracheal epithelial cells to understand this process. Most centrosomal proteins were up-regulated early in ciliogenesis, initially appearing in cytoplasmic foci and then incorporated into centrioles. Three candidate proteins were further characterized. The centrosomal component SAS-6 localized to basal bodies and the proximal region of the ciliary axoneme, and depletion of SAS-6 prevented centriole assembly

"HHA faintly inhibited attachment to HEC-1A cells of the R5-tropic HIV-1Ba-L strain, in a dose-dependent manner, whereas GNA moderately inhibited HIV adsorption in the same context, but only at high drug doses. Only HHA, but not GNA, inhibited HIV-1JR-CSF transcytosis in a dose-dependent manner. By confocal microscopy, HHA, but not GNA, was adsorbed at the epithelial cell surface, suggesting that HHA interacts specifically with receptors mediating HIV-1 transcytosis.
