A quarter of mammals face extinction

sea-maid submitted, created time 1 month 3 weeks (www.nature.com)

This article covers one of the most, possibly the most, comprehensive studies of endangered animals in human history. Previous efforts have had to limit themselves to only better-known or better-studied species, but this one covers marine and obscure mammals as well.

"One in four of the world's mammal species is threatened with extinction, according to the first comprehensive survey of this class of animal. Populations are declining in half of all mammal species, with some experiencing an extreme decline. Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) numbers have plummeted by 60%" since 1998

Coral-killing starfish curbed by fishing ban

lavrock submitted, created time 4 months 4 days (environment.newscientist.com)

IF YOU want to save coral reefs from rapacious starfish, you should ban fishing.

The crown-of-thorns starfish, Acanthaster planci, preys on corals in some of the most biodiverse and threatened reefs in the world, dwarfing coral losses from storms and bleaching. The predator is less devastating in "no-take zones" of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, however, where fishing has been banned since 1989 (Current Biology, vol 18, p R598)

Global warming threatens tropical insects

sea-maid submitted, created time 6 months 1 day (news.bbc.co.uk)

From this study, we know that insects in the tropics are much more sensitive to temperature changes than those elsewhere. U.S. scientists have said that many tropical insects face extinction by the end of this century unless they adapt to the rising global temperatures predicted.

Climate change threatens polar bears, hawks, and snakes

kavin submitted, created time 7 months 4 days (www.msnbc.msn.com)

There are several different views on the species which would face extinction. Some have preferred to call the polar bear a "special concern species," saying that the evidence isn't strong enough to recommend threatened or endangered status. Others think climate change is a threat to the survival of the polar bear. In the end, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada examined 31 various species and concluded the ferruginous hawk should be upgraded to threatened from special concern, while two populations of the eastern foxsnake in Ontario are now considered endangered.

Chilling Lessons from Ice Ages Past

Eric wu submitted, created time 9 months 1 week (sciencenow.sciencemag.org)

Researchers studying the effects of ancient climate patterns on Antarctic waters have reached an alarming conclusion: The inhabitants of those seas were able to cling to life by the thinnest of margins during past ice ages, but they might not be able to weather the temperature increases predicted for the next century. In particular danger are the birds and mammals occupying the top of the food chain, such as emperor penguins and sea lions.

Dinosaur deaths outsourced to India?

george submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (www.geosociety.org)

A series of monumental volcanic eruptions in India may have killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, not a meteor impact in the Gulf of Mexico. The eruptions, which created the gigantic Deccan Traps lava beds of India, are now the prime suspect in the most famous and persistent paleontological murder mystery, say scientists who have conducted a slew of new investigations honing down eruption timing.

Role reversal as humans suck life out of leeches

scott submitted, created time 1 year 2 months (www.springer-sbm.com)

Global warming may be to blame for the gradual extinction of cold-loving species, and the European land leech in particular, according to a study which will be published in the December issue of Springer抯 journal Naturwissenschaften.

New study shows greenback cutthroat trout involved in recovery effort misidentified

benjiamin submitted, created time 1 year 2 months (www.eurekalert.org)

A new study led by the University of Colorado at Boulder indicates biologists trying to save Colorado's native greenback cutthroat trout from extinction over the past several decades through hatchery propagation and restocking efforts have, in most cases, inadvertently restored the wrong fish.

Report: African, Asian, Latin American farm animals face extinction

herry submitted, created time 1 year 2 months (www.eurekalert.org)

With the world's first global inventory of farm animals showing many breeds of African, Asian, and Latin American livestock at risk of extinction, scientists from the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research today called for the rapid establishment of genebanks to conserve the sperm and ovaries of key animals critical for the global population's future survival.

One-sixth of Europe's mammals face extinction

enderyin submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.nature.com)

One-sixth of Europe's mammal species are threatened with extinction, according to a comprehensive survey by the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Unless the trend is reversed, conservationists fear that the European Union will not be able to meet its self-imposed target of halting biodiversity loss by 2010. "This new assessment proves that many European mammals are declining at an alarming rate," says IUCN director-general Julia Marton-Lefèvre. "However, we still have the power to reverse that trend, as the case of the European bison which was brought back from extinction clearly shows."

Symbiotic bacteria may save endangered frogs

Darkfrog submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.nature.com)

I'm a bit leery of introducing one species to control another -- in this case, probiotic bacteria to kill a fungus that's killing off several amphibian species -- but if the frogs are on the brink of extinction, it might be worth the risk.

What do you think? The stakes are high. Just think of the damage the bacteria could do if something goes wrong. This is a genie-out-of-the-bottle trick. Nothing's going back in.

Hunters kill one of last Amur Leopards

fiona submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.reuters.com)

"Hunters in Russia's Far East have shot and killed one of the last seven surviving female Amur leopards living in the wild, WWF said on Monday, driving the species even closer to extinction."

Cocaine-Associated Stimuli Increase Cocaine Seeking and Activate Accumbens Core Neurons after Abstinence

julie submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.jneurosci.org)

”Electrophysiological recordings were completed in rats (n = 14) trained to self-administer cocaine to determine whether activation of nucleus accumbens (Acb) neurons (core vs shell) by cocaine-associated stimuli is enhanced after 1 month of cocaine abstinence.“

Risk of extinction accelerated due to interacting human threats

drunkard submitted, created time 1 year 9 months (www.eurekalert.org)

The simultaneous effect of habitat fragmentation, overexploitation, and climate warming could accelerate the decline of populations and substantially increase their risk of extinction, a study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B has warned.

Using experimental microcosm populations of rotifers (a type of zooplankton), the study found that individually each of these threats caused significant population declines. The study also found that the rate of declines was much accelerated when populations were exposed to more than one threat
