Fossil faces pinpoint earliest North Americans
jane2007 submitted, created time 7 months 3 weeks (www.nature.com)
Some 14,300-year-old fossilized human feces have been found in Oregon, offering the oldest firm evidence yet of humans in North America, and the oldest human DNA in all the Americas.

How many genome sequences do you need to characterize a model organism? For Drosophila, Heidi Ledford finds, a dozen is a good start.
Getting the genome sequence for one's favourite organism is still an achievement, but researchers are realizing that to truly understand how genomes function and evolve, they need points of comparison.

A global analysis of genetic interactions in Caenorhabditis elegans
june submitted, created time 1 year 2 months (www.sciencedaily.com)
We investigated interactions between 11 'query' mutants in conserved signal transduction pathways and hundreds of 'target' genes compromised by RNA interference (RNAi). Mutant-RNAi combinations that grew more slowly than controls were identified, and genetic interactions inferred through an unbiased global analysis of the interaction matrix. A network of 1,246 interactions was uncovered, establishing the largest metazoan genetic-interaction network to date. We refer to this approach as systematic genetic interaction analysis (SGI)

"Although ANN analysis was more powerful than the standard haplotype-based test it is unlikely to be taken up widely. The permutation testing necessary to obtain a valid p value makes it slow to perform and it is not underpinned by a theoretical model relating marker genotypes to disease phenotype. Nevertheless, the superior performance of this method does imply that the widely-used haplotype-based methods for detecting association with multiple markers are not optimal and efforts could be made to improve upon them

"'These data validate laser-scanning velocimetry as a quantitative tool to measure cardiovascular performance for pharmacological and genetic analysis in zebrafish, which requires no specialized equipment other than a laser-scanning confocal microscope.

"DArT-BSA identifies genetic loci that influence phenotypic characters in barley with at least 5 cM accuracy and should prove useful as a generic tool for high-throughput, quantitative BSA in plants irrespective of their ploidy level."

Gut check: Tracking the ecosystem within us
BIOBOSS submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (www.eurekalert.org)
By applying sophisticated genetic analysis to samples of a year's worth baby poop, Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers have developed a detailed picture of how an astonishing number of bacteria come and go in the intestinal tract during a child's first year of life.

First confirmed common genetic risk factors for breast cancer
julie submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.biologynews.net)
"The most powerful genetic analysis of the DNA codes of over 40,000 women -- including those with breast cancer as well as those without the disease – has uncovered five common genetic variants that increase an individual’s risk for breast cancer."
