A global analysis of genetic interactions in Caenorhabditis elegans
june submitted, created time 1 year 3 months (www.sciencedaily.com)
We investigated interactions between 11 'query' mutants in conserved signal transduction pathways and hundreds of 'target' genes compromised by RNA interference (RNAi). Mutant-RNAi combinations that grew more slowly than controls were identified, and genetic interactions inferred through an unbiased global analysis of the interaction matrix. A network of 1,246 interactions was uncovered, establishing the largest metazoan genetic-interaction network to date. We refer to this approach as systematic genetic interaction analysis (SGI)

Genetic screening fails women trying for IVF birth
DanyC submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.reutershealth.com)
Scientists said on Wednesday, genetic screening, often seen as the best hope for older women undergoing IVF treatment to have a child, is ineffective and actually reduces rates of pregnancies.

UCSB Study on Sibling Detection Mechanism Highlighted in 'Nature'
penguin submitted, created time 1 year 10 months (www.ia.ucsb.edu)
Fundamental theories in evolutionary biology have long proposed that biological kinship is the foundation of the family unit. It creates the sense of altruism that exists among genetically related family members and establishes boundaries regarding sexual relations within the nuclear family. However, questions have persisted regarding the means by which humans recognize family members – particularly siblings – as close genetic relatives

Modeling complex genetic interactions in a simple eukaryotic genome
digiview submitted, created time 1 year 11 months (www.genesdev.org)
The actin cytoskeleton of yeast was used to determine the potential for deleterious bigenic interactions; complex hemizygote strains were constructed between an actin-null allele and the nonessential gene deletion collection. It was found 208 genes that have deleterious complex haploinsufficient (CHI) interactions with actin. Spatial congruence in the data suggest that the loss of binding to specific actin-binding proteins causes subsets of CHI interactions.
