Girls = Boys at Math

jerry submitted, created time 4 months 6 days (sciencenow.sciencemag.org)

There's no real difference between the scores of U.S. boys and girls on common math tests, according to a massive new study. Educators hope the finding will finally dispel lingering perceptions that girls don't measure up to boys when it comes to crunching numbers.

"This shows there's no issue of intellectual ability--and that's a message we still need to get out to some of our parents and teachers," says Henry "Hank" Kepner, president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Reston, Virginia.

It won't be a new message

Taking On the Thin Ideal

kavin submitted, created time 5 months 1 week (www.time.com)

There's nothing new about TV and fashion magazines giving girls unhealthy ideas about how thin they need to be in order to be considered beautiful. What is surprising is the method psychologists at the University of Texas have come up with to keep girls from developing eating disorders. Their main weapon against superskinny (role) models: a brand of civil disobedience dubbed "body activism." Related Articles

Smart Girls Eat Fish

kavin submitted, created time 5 months 1 week (sciencenow.sciencemag.org)

Girls who eat more omega-3 fatty acids outsmart those who eat higher amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, according to new research. As a result of this and other studies, government dietary recommendations--especially those aimed at pregnant women--should emphasize fish over soy and corn oils, which are respectively high in these fatty acids.

Women who accumulated more fat on their hips than on their waists--and who, therefore, had low waist-hip ratios like many movie stars--had higher cognitive test scores, as did their children

kavin submitted, created time 5 months 1 week (www.msnbc.msn.com)

Girls at a Mass. high school agree to raise their babies together. A Massachusetts city is investigating an apparent teenage "pregnancy pact" that has at least 17 high-school girls expecting babies, four times more than last year, including many aged 16 or younger.

Two years later, cervical cancer vaccine is still an emotional battlefield.

DanyC submitted, created time 8 months 3 weeks (edition.cnn.com)

The HPV vaccine has been available to the public for almost two years, and moms also want their daughters to get the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine when they go to see their doctor, but mothers can't win over their daughters.
"I don't want to." "Well, sorry. You have to." There is still an emotional battlefield to the HPV vaccine. Another, the hitch is that the vaccine is suggested for adolescent girls, but the viruses in question are sexually transmitted. And that is one of the big reasons the HPV vaccine has divided parents in the question of "to give or not to give."

Gender Differences In Language Appear Biological

Although researchers have long agreed that girls have superior language abilities to boys, until now no one has clearly provided a biological basis that may account for their differences.

Why are there no boys in the Gardasil commercial?

Darkfrog submitted, created time 9 months 6 days (www.nytimes.com)

Although I knew that it was possible to give the anti-HPV vaccine to boys (it would protect them from getting genital warts in addition to making them less likely to give the cervical-cancer-causing virus to any female partners) I have to admit, the question didn't occur to me. Usually, drug companies are so eager to market their wares to as many people as possible, but there is a real dearth of pro-male HPV vaccine advertising out there.

Apoorva Mandavilli on hype and the the HPV vaccine

Darkfrog submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.nature.com)

Most of Ms. Mandavilli's opinion piece on the HPV vaccine is straight-up good sense: "We don't know how long its effects will last yet." "It's being touted, perhaps beyond its worth." She points out a few of the vaccine's less-publicized flaws, namely that it doesn't do much for women who have been sexually active before receiving it. But I worry that opponents of the vaccine could take her words the wrong way, particularly, "We don't know how well it works

New Hampshire adopts voluntary HPV vaccine program

Hecate submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.nytimes.com)

While about eighteen US states have considered or are considering making HPV vaccination mandatory for young female students, New Hampshire has tried another tack: The state has made the vaccine available free of charge to girls between the ages of eleven and eighteen, offered on a highest-risk-first-served basis whenever supplies grow short.

The program has been highly successful, showing a huge turnout. “We usually have to bust our hump every September to convince people to get their flu shots,” the article quotes Greg Moore of the Health and Human Services Department

Cervical cancer rates continue to drop:

Darkfrog submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.cancer.org)

The American Cancer Society reports a 17% drop in cases of cervical cancer in the United States between 1998 and 2002, which it credits mostly to more widespread use of Pap smears to identify and remove precancerous cells. It also celebrates the wealth of information that has been gleaned regarding cervical cancer in different ethnic groups and regional populations.

Since the HPV vaccine did not come out until late last year, it does not factor in, but the Society anticipates that it will help reduce rates even further.

Texas legislature blocks mandatory HPV vaccination

Darkfrog submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.nytimes.com)

The Texas legislature has overruled Governor Perry's decree that all sixth-grade (about eleven years old) girls in Texas must be vaccinated with the HPV vaccine. This ruling does not in any way ban vaccination; it only says that the governor may not require it. Also, the ruling will only be in force for four years. Unless it is renewed, the governor of Texas may revisit the idea of mandatory HPV vaccinations in 2011

"Two 3-year-old girls joined at the head arrived Monday in a private jet from Dallas, a prelude to weeks of medical tests and possibly months of surgical procedures.

Texas requires HPV vaccination in middle school girls

Darkfrog submitted, created time 1 year 9 months (www.nytimes.com)

Texas, one of the most conservative states in the U.S., has passed a bill requiring all middle-school girls to show proof of HPV vaccination. Overall, I think this is a good move. As with the move in Colorado, parents will have the option of opting out, so this doesn't take medical decision-making out of the family's own hands. I still think that too many people think that this vaccine will cause or exacerbate promiscuity, but this is probably the best way to prove them wrong. Now let's all watch these Texas girls grow up with a lower rate of cancer and an identical rate of premarital sex
