An international team of researchers has used stem cells to create heart tissue, complete with beat. By treating embryonic stem cells with growth factors, they coaxed them into becoming cardiovascular progenitor cells, which then developed into cardiomyocytes, vascular smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells, which together form blood vessels. When injected into the hearts of mice with induced heart disease, they improve heart function.
What this discovery does not include is fibroblasts, the cells that form the framework of the heart.

A protein that determines whether breast cancer will spread and become deadly has been found. Monitoring for the protein could help patients to know how dangerous their cancer is before it spreads elsewhere and help them to decide which treatment to chose. 
Gene Mutation Linked to Longer Life

A type of gene mutation long known to extend the lives of worms, flies and mice also turns up in long-lived humans. Researchers found that among Ashkenazi Jews, those who survived past age 95 were much more likely than their peers to possess one of two similar mutations in the gene for insulinlike growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R).
