Doctors and medical associations have taken plenty of lumps for relying on drug companies to sponsor continuing medical education courses. Critics say the sessions are often biased in favor of a particular medicine or drugs over alternative treatments for disease.

Now add journalists to the groups that are getting professional education subsidized by Big Pharma.

Promoting the use of Personal Asthma Action Plans

To investigate how best to encourage health professionals to promote, and for people with asthma to use, asthma action plans, the researchers randomised controlled trials published between 1960 and 2006 were searched using multiple electronic databases. Unpublished and ongoing studies were identified by contacting asthma experts internationally. Included trials reported outcome data for the promotion of action plans including issue of plans by health professionals, and patient ownership and use. 14 trials satisfied their study inclusion criteria
