Stem cell research community warns against fraudulent clinics

Darkfrog submitted, created time 1 month 5 days (www.nature.com)

Most scientists will tell you that stem cells show enormous potential and that we could see treatments for anything from diabetes to spinal cord injuries entering clinical trials any day now ...but let them know that the clinic down the street is offering "stem cell treatments" right as we speak, and the reaction gets significantly less optimistic.

The International Society for Stem Cell Research--the same organization that came out against stem cell tourism last year--has warned against clinics offering fraudulent, dangerous and unproven treatments

MAPC adult stem cells shown to be a hoax ...or at least an error

sea-maid submitted, created time 2 months 3 weeks (www.newscientist.com)

This is a simple and concise writeup of the recent scandal involving stem cell research team led by Catherine Verfaille of the University of Minnesota that is accused of falsifying data. As it turns out, some of the inconsistencies in the paper in question were only errors, but it has been confirmed that there was also misrepresentation involved. For example, two of the images accompanying a paper that the team published in the journal Blood, meant to represent the results of different experiments, were actually the same image, flipped and altered

The emergence of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia ...exaggerated

sea-maid submitted, created time 6 months 3 weeks (www.bmj.com)

Headlines about S maltophilia, including "no antibiotics can stop it" and "rising death toll in hospitals" are unfounded, write Georgia Duckworth and Alan Johnson, from the Health Protection Agency's Centre for Infections in London. In fact, they say, S maltophilia infections are relatively rare compared to infections caused by bacteria such as meticillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Is this for real? President Bush revamps science policies.

Darkfrog submitted, created time 9 months 1 week (sciencenow.sciencemag.org)

According to this article in Science, President Bush has just decided to "be friends" with science and scientists. He's budjeted $10 billion to the NIH, when he'd vetoed a $1 billion increase in the past, and he's talking about relaxing his takes on stem cell research and admits that his "Healthy Forests" and "Clear Skies" initiatives have increased logging and pollution. The more I read this, the more convinced I become that this is an April Fool's Day hoax.

Oh well... For a moment, I was convinced.

Reprogrammed Skin Cells Strut Their Stuff

Eric wu submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (sciencenow.sciencemag.org)

I am so excited when I read this good news.No doubt,It has taken a hopeful light for our human being to conquer sickle cell anemia.

It has been reported that common skin cells transfered to stem cells by adding four special genes two weeks ago.It also has a debate in China. A Chinese scientist whose name is not specific to me wrote a article in China GuangMing Daily to declare that the new breakthrough on stem cell research has referred to his achievement more or less. But another Chinese scientist who is famous for revealing false science made a face for his action
