There is evidence that the primate prefrontal cortex is involved in the monitoring of the order in which stimuli occur. The prefrontal cortical areas, however, involved in the capacity of the human brain to encode and hold "in mind" the precise order of occurrence of a limited number of visual stimuli after a single exposure are not known. Changes in regional cerebral activity were measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging while subjects were coding the precise order of a short sequence of abstract visual stimuli

New research proves single origin of humans in Africa

New research published in the journal Nature July 19 has proved the single origin of humans theory by combining studies of global genetic variations in humans with skull measurements across the world. The research, at the University of Cambridge and funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, represents a final blow for supporters of a multiple origins of humans theory.

Groundwork Laid For Rejection-Free Lung Transplants In Humans
broadcast submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (www.medicalnewstoday.com)
Lung transplants have been performed successfully for more than 20 years in humans but never before in mice -- until now. Ultimately, the mouse model could pave the way for developing new therapies to prevent lung transplant rejection -- a major problem that limits the long-term success of the procedure. The mouse model is described in the June issue of the American Journal of Transplantation.

Plasma 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels and Risk of Incident Hypertension

"Among women, the same comparison yielded a relative risk of 2.67 (95% CI: 1.05 to 6.79). The pooled relative risk combining men and women with measured 25(OH)D levels using the random-effects model was 3.18 (95% CI: 1.39 to 7.29). Using predicted 25(OH)D levels in the larger cohorts, the multivariable relative risks comparing the lowest to highest deciles were 2.31 (95% CI: 2.03 to 2.63) in men and 1.57 (95% CI: 1.44 to 1.72) in women. Plasma 25(OH)D levels are inversely associated with risk of incident hypertension. "

"An ambitious project that promises to extend humanity's view of itself.
“NO MAN is an island,” wrote John Donne. He was thinking of the wider society of which every human being is a member, but it is also true that human bodies themselves are societies. Besides the 10 trillion human cells in a body, there are another 100 trillion bacterial cells

“Despite considerable progress in recent years, the underlying mechanisms responsible for the failure of axonal regeneration after spinal cord injury (SCI) remain only partially understood. Experimental data have demonstrated that a major impediment to the outgrowth of severed axons is the scar tissue that finally dominates the lesion site and, in severe injuries, is comprised of connective tissue and fluid-filled cysts, surrounded by a dense astroglial scar

Does human head lice originated from contact with chimpanzees?
captainclaw submitted, created time 1 year 9 months (www.abc.net.au)
Around 3.3 million years ago, gorillas gave our early hominid ancestors pubic lice, and humans have had them ever since, according to new research. Reed and his colleagues extracted DNA from the lice. They then used fossil data from humans and gorillas to estimate how long ago the two parasite species shared a common ancestor.
Their findings are published in the current issue of the journal BMC Biology.

Canadian researchers first to complete the human metabalome
cappuccion submitted, created time 1 year 11 months (www.eurekalert.org)
Researchers at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada, have announced the completion of the first draft of the human metabolome, the chemical equivalent of the human genome. The metabolome is the complete complement of all small molecule chemicals (metabolites) found in or produced by an organism. By analogy, if the genome represents the blueprint of life, the metabolome represents the ingredients of life.Their work represents the starting point for a new era in diagnosing and detecting diseases.
