Liver X Receptor Activation Potentiates the Lipopolysaccharide Response in Human Macrophages

Reviver submitted, created time 1 year 3 months (circres.ahajournals.org)

"These data provide evidence for an immunomodulatory function of LXRs in human macrophages via mechanisms distinct from those previously identified in mouse macrophages."

Chimps Spotted Using Caves, Like Early Humans

Dolly submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.livescience.com)

Savannah chimpanzees, which can make weapons to hunt other primates for meat, can also seek refuge in caves, much like our earliest human ancestors. New findings suggest the chimps apparently shelter themselves in caves to hide from the extreme African heat. The cave use was documented by visual observations and photographs.

psychological experiment: beauty vs. the subway

Darkfrog submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.washingtonpost.com)

This was so amazing that I had to post it right away. 1000 people, a terror of a commute, and one of the finest musicians alive is playing some of human history's greatest art. This isn't just another, "Oh look how busy we are" pop psych piece. Watch what it does to the artist.

The evolutionary history of human DNA transposons: Evidence for intense activity in the primate lineage

angelfish submitted, created time 1 year 10 months (www.genome.org)

“Class 2, or DNA transposons, make up 3% of the human genome, yet the evolutionary history of these elements has been largely overlooked and remains poorly understood. Here scientists carried out the first comprehensive analysis of the activity of human DNA transposons over the course of primate evolution using three independent computational methods. First, They conducted an exhaustive search for human DNA transposons nested within L1 and Alu elements known to be primate specific

Risk of extinction accelerated due to interacting human threats

drunkard submitted, created time 1 year 11 months (www.eurekalert.org)

The simultaneous effect of habitat fragmentation, overexploitation, and climate warming could accelerate the decline of populations and substantially increase their risk of extinction, a study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B has warned.

Using experimental microcosm populations of rotifers (a type of zooplankton), the study found that individually each of these threats caused significant population declines. The study also found that the rate of declines was much accelerated when populations were exposed to more than one threat

Report: Human activity fuels global warming

diggman submitted, created time 1 year 11 months (www.physorg.com)

In Paris, a 21-page summary of a much longer study on the science behind climate change, concludes there is a greater than 90 percent chance that greenhouse gases from human activity are responsible for most of the steadily rising average global temperatures observed in the past 50 years.
