Cancer Immunology Review

kavin submitted, created time 4 months 4 weeks (content.nejm.org)

Much has been learned about the potential of the immune system to control cancer and the various ways that immunotherapy can boost the potential of the immune system for the benefit of the patient. This knowledge has stimulated the invention of many new therapeutic antibodies, cell-based treatments, and vaccines, which are starting to be used in clinical practice, either alone or in various combinations. These new therapies are expected to result in improved cancer treatment and, eventually, the prevention of cancer.

Melanoma Cured 100% through Blood Cell Therapy

kavin submitted, created time 4 months 4 weeks (www.efluxmedia.com)

The results of a new study conducted by a researcher team at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, give hope for those suffering from melanoma, one of the rarer types of skin cancer but the one which causes the majority of skin cancer related deaths.

Researchers who took part in the study used a patient's cloned T cells (helper cells) to put an advanced cancer into complete remission. Nine patients took part in the experimental melanoma treatment program.

The researchers were very surprised after they treated a 52-year-old man from Oregon of his Stage 4 melanoma

Molecular basis for passive immunotherapy of Alzheimer's disease

benjiamin submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (www.pnas.org)

Amyloid aggregates of the amyloid-β(Aβ) peptide are implicated in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease. Anti-Aβ monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have been shown to reduce amyloid plaques in vitro and in animal studies.

Treating hay fever prevents asthma in some kids

DanyC submitted, created time 1 year 3 months (www.reutershealth.com)

Researchers say, children who suffer from hay fever, due to allergies to mold or pollen, are less likely to go on to develop asthma if they get immunotherapy to combat their sensitivity to allergy-triggers.

Prospects for the use of NK cells in immunotherapy of human cancer

sciencebaby submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.nature.com)

Current insights into the molecular specificities that regulate natural killer (NK)-cell function suggest that it might be possible to design NK-cell-based immunotherapeutic strategies against human cancer. Here, we describe evidence for NK-cell targeting of human tumours and address crucial questions that, in our opinion, require consideration for the development of successful NK-cell-based therapies. Appropriately used, we predict that NK cells will have a role, both directly and in combination with other treatment modalities, in future treatment of cancer.

Alternative splicing due to an intronic SNP in HMSD generates a novel minor histocompatibility antigen

Cindy submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (bloodjournal.hematologylibrary.org)

It is reported here the identification of a novel HLA-B44-restricted minor histocompatibility antigen (mHA) with expression limited to hematopoietic cells. cDNA expression cloning studies demonstrated that the CTL epitope of interest was encoded by a novel allelic splice variant of HMSD, hereafter designated as HMSD-v. The immunogenicity of the epitope was generated by differential protein expression due to alternative splicing, which was completely controlled by one intronic single nucleotide polymorphism located in the consensus 5' splice site adjacent to an exon

T-regulatory cells are relatively deficient in squamous carcinomas undergoing regression in mice immunized with a squamous carcinoma vaccine enriched for immunotherapeutic cells

addict submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.nature.com)

In a prior report the scientists described a new vaccination strategy for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The vaccine was prepared by transfer of unfractionated DNA-fragments (25 kb) from KLN205 cells, a squamous carcinoma cell line (DBA/2 origin; H-2d) into LM cells, a highly immunogenic mouse fibroblast cell line (C3H/He origin; (H-2k))
