What are the metabolic costs of digesting a meal?

mmccue submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (comp.uark.edu)

All animals incur unavoidable metabolic costs associated with digesting food which take away from their net energy gains, a phenomenon is known as specific dynamic action (SDA). Interestingly, despite a century of inquiry, modern scientists cannot agree on exactly why this is. This review summarizes the history of physiological and nutritional inquiries into SDA, and discuses the various hypotheses that have been advanced to SDA throughout the decades

High insulin levels impair intestinal metabolic function

collapsar submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.eurekalert.org)

Nutritional scientists at the University of Alberta are the first to establish a connection between high insulin levels and dysfunction of intestinal lipid metabolism in an animal model. They believe this finding supports their contention that impaired intestinal metabolic function plays a critical role in the development of cardiovascular disease. The research was published recently in the journal Atherosclerosis.
