Moderate drinking may lower kidney cancer risk

Rhett submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.sciam.com)

Having a drink or two per day appears to modestly decrease the risk of developing kidney cell cancer, new research findings suggest, regardless of the type of alcoholic drink that is consumed. Multiple studies have hinted at an inverse association between alcohol and kidney cancer, investigators point out in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Attenuation of PTEN increases p21 stability and cytosolic localization in kidney cancer cell

Scarlett submitted, created time 1 year 10 months (www.molecular-cancer.com)

PTEN, a tumor suppressor gene, was frequently mutated or deleted in a wide variety of solid tumors, and these cancers are generally more aggressive and difficult to treat than those possessing wild type PTEN. While PTEN lies upstream of the phosphoinositide-3 kinase signaling pathway, the mechanisms that mediate its effects on tumor survival remain incompletely understood. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is associated with frequent treatment failures (~90% in metastatic cases), and these tumors frequently contain PTEN abnormalities
