Unusual Signs You'll Live longer Than You Imagined

sea-maid submitted, created time 1 month 2 weeks (www.reuters.com)

With my 40th birthday looming ahead of me in the next few weeks I do sometimes think (not to be morbid or anything) of how long I will live and if my life is half over, etc, etc (you get the point). I saw this article on “Surprising Signs You’ll Live Longer Than You Think” and could not resist sharing it with you. Now, I will say this, I do want to live a long time more (as long as I am in good health and can take care of myself) but I don’t want to outlive everyone in my peer group

Longevity, cancer and diet connected: New research in worms could apply to humans

sea-maid submitted, created time 3 months 2 weeks (esciencenews.com)

The genes TOR and pha4/FoxA have been linked to both cancer and the aging process in C. elegans, and it appears that the results might apply to humans as well.

Life Expectancy Tied to Education?

Sue Wu submitted, created time 9 months 3 weeks (www.cbsnews.com)

When it comes to education, does having more mean you live longer? A new study shows that highly educated Americans are expected to live longer than those with fewer years of schooling.

Gene Mutation Linked to Longer Life

Sue Wu submitted, created time 10 months 3 days (www.sciam.com)

A type of gene mutation long known to extend the lives of worms, flies and mice also turns up in long-lived humans. Researchers found that among Ashkenazi Jews, those who survived past age 95 were much more likely than their peers to possess one of two similar mutations in the gene for insulinlike growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R).

Nrf2 mediates cancer protection but not prolongevity induced by caloric restriction

davidd submitted, created time 10 months 2 weeks (www.pnas.org)

Caloric restriction (CR) is the most potent intervention known to both protect against carcinogenesis and extend lifespan in laboratory animals. A variety of anticarcinogens and CR mimetics induce and activate the NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway. Nrf2, in turn, induces a number of antioxidative and carcinogen-detoxifying enzymes. Thus, Nrf2 offers a promising target for anticarcinogenesis and antiaging interventions. They used Nrf2-disrupted (KO) mice to examine its role on the biological effects of CR

Live slow die young

Active people could be up to 10 years "younger" than couch potatoes, at least according to one measure of biological age.

Can We Cure Aging?

Sue Wu submitted, created time 1 year 4 weeks (discovermagazine.com)

Jim Hammond is an elite athlete. He works out two hours a day with a trainer, pushing himself through sprints, runs, and strength-building exercises. His resting heart rate is below 50. He’s won three gold medals and one silver in amateur competitions this year alone, running races from 100 to 800 meters. In his division, he’s broken four national racing records. But perhaps the most elite thing about Hammond is his age.

Worm study shows antidepressant may lengthen life

yangjane submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (www.reuters.com)

An antidepressant may help worms live longer by tricking the brain into thinking the body is starving, U.S. researchers reported.

New clue into how diet and exercise enhance longevity

sumsung submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (www.eurekalert.org)

The traditional prescriptions for a healthy life-sensible diet, exercise and weight control -- extend life by reducing signaling through a specific pathway in the brain, according to Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers, who discovered the connection while studying long-lived mice.

Reducing insulin signaling in the brain can prolong lifespan

sumsung submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (www.childrenshospital.org)

A study from Children's Hospital Boston finds that reducing insulin levels in the brain boosts longevity. Though it was done in genetically engineered mice, old-fashioned exercise and good diets also keep brain insulin levels low in humans.
