PAS kinase is required for normal cellular energy balance
deutschen submitted, created time 1 year 3 months (www.pnas.org)
The metabolic syndrome, a complex set of phenotypes typically associated with obesity and diabetes, is an increasing threat to global public health. They studied the role of the cellular metabolic sensor PAS kinase (PASK) in the pathogenesis of metabolic disease by using PASK–/– mice. We identified tissue-specific metabolic phenotypes caused by PASK deletion consistent with its role as a metabolic sensor.

Metabolic syndrome now appears among teens

A new study suggests that with the breathing disorder sleep apnea, , teenagers may be at increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome -- a collection of risk factors of diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Diet or regular? A dilemma for soda drinkers
abc01 submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (www.reutershealth.com)
Diet sodas are often touted as a way to avoid the health problems linked to regular sodas, but a study released last week raised questions when it showed an association between both diet and regular soft drinks and metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome -- don't blame the belly fat
bianjie submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (www.eurekalert.org)
Abdominal fat, the spare tire that many of us carry, has long been implicated as a primary suspect in causing the metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that includes the most dangerous heart attack risk factors: prediabetes, diabetes, high blood pressure, and changes in cholesterol. But researchers have found that insulin resistance in skeletal muscle leads to alterations in energy storage that set the stage for the metabolic syndrome.

What are the metabolic costs of digesting a meal?
mmccue submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (comp.uark.edu)
All animals incur unavoidable metabolic costs associated with digesting food which take away from their net energy gains, a phenomenon is known as specific dynamic action (SDA). Interestingly, despite a century of inquiry, modern scientists cannot agree on exactly why this is. This review summarizes the history of physiological and nutritional inquiries into SDA, and discuses the various hypotheses that have been advanced to SDA throughout the decades

Metabolic Syndrome Points To Heart Health

Typified by high blood pressure, weight gain around the waist and problems regulating blood sugar, metabolic syndrome may also be associated with compromised heart structure and function, according to a paper published in the online open access journal BMC Cardiovascular Disorders.

Cherries may help reduce metabolic syndrome and heart disease risk factors
Dolly submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.eurekalert.org)
ncreasing intake of antioxidant-rich cherries may help lower the risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease, suggests a new study.

"Having several metabolic risk factors is associated with low circulating natriuretic peptide levels, even after adjustment for body mass index. These findings raise the possibility that reduced natriuretic peptide activity is a manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, which may have important clinical and pathophysiological implications. "
