Objective: To evaluate the impact of combinations of lifestyle factors on mortality in middle aged women.
Design Prospective: cohort study.

Setting: Nurses’ health study, United States.

Participants: 77,782 women aged thirty-four to fifty-nine years and free from cardiovascular disease and cancer in 1980

Risk of Dying Linked to Low Vitamin D

kavin submitted, created time 5 months 1 week (www.webmd.com)

A new study shows that people who have low levels of vitamin D in their blood had a greater risk of dying.

Researchers led by Harald Dobnig, MD, of the Medical University of Graz, Austria, tracked 3,258 men and women who had been referred for an angiogram of their heart arteries. More than two-thirds had significant blockages in their coronary arteries.

The patients were followed for about eight years. During that time, 737 of them died, including 463 from cardiovascular problems

Blood-sucking device saves heart patients, study shows

sea-maid submitted, created time 5 months 2 weeks (www.latimes.com)

The vacuum-cleaner-like apparatus removes clots before angioplasty, preventing fragments from breaking off. Death rates in the year following surgery are cut in half, researchers say.

Aggressive diabetes care doesn't prevent deaths

kavin submitted, created time 5 months 3 weeks (www.msnbc.msn.com)

Aggressively treating diabetes does not prevent heart problems and deaths any better than standard treatment for lowering blood sugar.

Association of Oral Calcitriol with Improved Survival in Nondialyzed CKD

kavin submitted, created time 6 months 3 weeks (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

As we know, parenteral vitamin D is associated with improved survival among long-term hemodialysis patients. This paper tells us that association of calcitriol with improved survival was not statistically different across baseline parathyroid hormone levels. Calcitriol use was associated with a greater risk for hypercalcemia. In conclusion, oral calcitriol use is associated with lower mortality in nondialysis patients with CKD.

Drug markers questioned

jane2007 submitted, created time 8 months 4 hours (www.nature.com)

A recent spate of worrying clinical-trial data has researchers questioning drugs approved on the basis of how they affect biomarkers rather than clinical endpoints. Heidi Ledford looks at surrogate markers.

Infants of obese mothers have higher mortality risk

crazy submitted, created time 1 year 2 weeks (www.reuters.com)

Obese women are at increased risk of having their infant die soon after birth, especially if premature rupture of membranes (PROM) occurs before full-term, according to a report in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Effects of Bariatric Surgery on Mortality in Swedish Obese Subjects

jiangyun submitted, created time 1 year 3 months (content.nejm.org)

Obesity is associated with increased mortality. Weight loss improves cardiovascular risk factors, but no prospective interventional studies have reported whether weight loss decreases overall mortality. In fact, many observational studies suggest that weight reduction is associated with increased mortality.

Impact of Smoking and Smoking Cessation on Lung Cancer Mortality in the Asia-Pacific Region

badboy submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (aje.oxfordjournals.org)

"Cigarette smoking is becoming increasingly common in Asia while quitting remains rare, in part because of a lack of knowledge about the risks of smoking. The lesser effect in Asia was partly explained by the fewer number of cigarettes smoked and the shorter duration of follow-up in Asian studies. These results suggest that tobacco control policies in Asia should not solely concentrate on preventing the uptake of smoking but also attend to cessation. "

Using Multiple Cause-of-Death Data to Investigate Associations and Causality between Conditions Listed on the Death Certificate

addict submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (aje.oxfordjournals.org)

Death rarely results from only one cause, and it can be caused by a variety of factors. Multiple cause-of-death data files can list as many as 20 contributing causes of death in addition to the reported underlying cause of death. Analysis of multiple cause-of-death data can provide information on associations between causes of death, revealing common combinations of events or conditions which lead to death. Additionally, physicians report the causal train of events through which they believe that different conditions or events may have led to each other and ultimately caused death

Enhanced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality during rhythm control treatment in persistent atrial fibrillation in hypertensives: data of the RACE study

amanda submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (eurheartj.oxfordjournals.org)

" In persistent AF patients with hypertension, a pharmacological rhythm control approach is associated with enhanced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Therefore, rate-control strategy should be considered in these patients. "

Long-term Aspirin Use and Mortality in Women

alpha submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (archinte.ama-assn.org)

"In women, low to moderate doses of aspirin are associated with significantly lower risk of all-cause mortality, particularly in older women and those with cardiac risk factors. A significant benefit is evident within 5 years for cardiovascular disease, whereas a modest benefit for cancer is not apparent until after 10 years of use. "

Death risk high soon after arrhythmia diagnosis

channel submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (abcnews.go.com)

People who are diagnosed for the first-time with a dangerous heart rhythm disturbance called atrial fibrillation have a significantly greater early risk of dying compared with those without this condition, Minnesota-based researchers report. Atrial fibrillation is a condition in which the heart's upper chambers quiver instead of beating regularly. This arrhythmia increases the risk of stroke, heart failure, cognitive impairment and death. Atrial fibrillation is a growing public health problem, but little is known about the overall mortality trends of these patients after diagnosis.

Zinc supplementation found to reduce mortality in older children

BIOBOSS submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.jhsph.edu)

A clinical trial conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public concluded that daily zinc supplements reduced the risk of death among children aged 12 to 48 months by 18 percent. However, the researchers did not find any significant reduction in mortality among children 1 to 11 months of age.

A newly devised scoring system for prediction of mortality of colorectal cancer

biscuits submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.thelancet.com)

Postoperative morbidity and mortality from colorectal cancer varies widely across hospitals in the UK. We aimed to assess whether a newly developed score from the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) could predict mortality from colorectal cancer surgery as accurately as the Physiology and Operative Severity Score for enUmeration of Mortality and morbidity (POSSUM), Portsmouth POSSUM (P-POSSUM), or the ColoRectal POSSUM (CR-POSSUM).
