Cell cycle status in neurodegeneration

sea-maid submitted, created time 4 months 3 weeks (genomebiology.com)

Profiling of gene expression changes in mice harbouring the neurodegenerative Wlds mutation shows a strong correlation between changes in cell cycle pathways and altered vulnerability of terminally differentiated neurons.

Rosemary chicken protects your brain from free radicals

jackson submitted, created time 1 year 2 weeks (www.burnham.org)

A collaborative group from the Burnham Institute for Medical Research (Burnham Institute) in La Jolla, Calif., and in Japan, report that the herb rosemary contains an ingredient that fights off free radical damage in the brain. The active ingredient in rosemary, known as carnosic acid, can protect the brain from stroke and neurodegeneration that is due to injurious chemical free radicals.

New brain cells listen before they talk

jimmy submitted, created time 1 year 2 weeks (www.eurekalert.org)

Newly-created neurons in adults rely on signals from distant brain regions to regulate their maturation and survival -- which has implications for using adult stem cells to replace those lost by trauma or neurodegeneration.

Loss of Vac14, a regulator of the signaling lipid phosphatidylinositol 3,5-bisphosphate, results in neurodegeneration in mice

zibba submitted, created time 1 year 3 weeks (www.pnas.org)

The signaling lipid, phosphatidylinositol 3,5-bisphosphate(PI(3,5)P2),likely functions in multiple signaling pathways. Here, we report the characterization of a mouse mutant lacking Vac14, a regulator of PI(3,5)P2 synthesis.

Early environmental exposure may accelerate age-related neurodegeneration

BIOBOSS submitted, created time 1 year 4 months (www.eurekalert.org)

Exposure to iron during the first weeks of life in combination with exposure later in life to a common herbicide may contribute to the subsequent degeneration of brain cells associated with the onset of Parkinson's disease (PD), according to a new study in mice. The findings also showed that a compound that protects cells in the body from damage from certain forms of oxygen, a kind of antioxidant, could suppress such neural degeneration.

Cell's Protein Recycling Systems Linked, Implications For Neurodegeneration

Dolly submitted, created time 1 year 5 months (www.medicalnewstoday.com)

Many age-related neurological diseases are associated with defective proteins accumulating in nerve cells, suggesting that the cell's normal disposal mechanisms are not operating correctly. Now, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have discovered a molecular link between the cell's two major pathways for breaking down proteins and have succeeded in using this link to rescue neurodegenerative diseases in a simple animal model. The study appears this week in Nature.

Autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation fails to stop demyelination and neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis

julie submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (brain.oxfordjournals.org)

"The present study analyses autopsy material from five multiple sclerosis patients who received autologous stem cell transplantation. A total of 53 white matter lesions were investigated using routine and immunohistochemical stainings to characterize the demyelinating activity, inflammatory infiltrates, acutely damaged axons and macrophages/microglial cells. We found evidence for ongoing active demyelination in all of the five patients. The inflammatory infiltrate within the lesions showed only very few T cells and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells dominated the T cell population

Memory Restored In Mice With Neurodegeneration By Enhancing Environment

cappuccion submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.medicalnewstoday.com)

Mice whose brains had lost a large number of neurons due to neurodegeneration regained long-term memories and the ability to learn after their surroundings were enriched with toys and other sensory stimuli, according to new studies by Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers. The scientists were able to achieve the same results when they treated the mice with a specific type of drug that encourages neuronal growth

Enhanced environment restores memory in mice with neurodegeneration

Cindy submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.eurekalert.org)

Mice whose brains had lost a large number of neurons due to neurodegeneration regained long-term memories and the ability to learn after their surroundings were enriched with toys and other sensory stimuli, according to new studies

Biomarkers of neurodegeneration for diagnosis and monitoring therapeutics

Dolly submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.nature.com)

Although the rapid progress towards understanding the molecular underpinnings of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease is revolutionizing drug discovery for these conditions and the development of models for these disorders is accelerating efforts to translate insights related to neurodegenerative mechanisms into disease-modifying therapies, there is an urgent need for biomarkers to diagnose neurodegenerative disorders early in their course, when therapy is likely to be most effective, and to monitor responses of patients to new therapies

New Hope For Parkinson's in Understanding Causes Of Cell Death

Paramecium submitted, created time 1 year 8 months (www.sciencedaily.com)

Uncontrolled neuronal death in the brain often gives rise to neurodegenerative illnesses like Parkinson or Alzheimer disease. Whether or not neurons have a long and healthy life is, apart from other factors, determined by the presence of neurotrophic factors.
