Endangered Species Act: details on the dilution
Darkfrog submitted, created time 4 months 3 weeks (www.nature.com)
Here are some more details on the kinds of projects that might be approved more easily, or without proper review, as some argue, under the more relaxed Endangered Species Act. The article specifically mentions pipelines, roads and logging and makes vaguer references to operations that could exacerbate global warming.
The article specifically mentions polar bears, the most visible species that seems to be in the most immediate danger from warming seas. It may be relevant that the polar bear is only listed as "threatened," not "endagered." Heh, well not for long!
Polar Bears: Protected, but Not Safe

After a year of deliberation, another four months in overtime and multiple lawsuits from environmental groups, the Bush Administration today listed the polar bear as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). But polar bears become endangered in the foreseeable future.

Climate change threatens polar bears, hawks, and snakes

There are several different views on the species which would face extinction. Some have preferred to call the polar bear a "special concern species," saying that the evidence isn't strong enough to recommend threatened or endangered status. Others think climate change is a threat to the survival of the polar bear. In the end, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada examined 31 various species and concluded the ferruginous hawk should be upgraded to threatened from special concern, while two populations of the eastern foxsnake in Ontario are now considered endangered.
Arctic warming poses risks to narwhals

The polar bear has become an icon of global warming vulnerability, but a new study found an Arctic mammal that may be even more at risk to climate change: the narwhal, which is a whale with a long spiral tusk that inspired the myth of the unicorn, edged out the polar bear for the ranking of most potentially vulnerable in a climate change risk analysis of Arctic marine mammals.

Three conservation groups sued the Department of the Interior on Monday for missing a deadline on a decision to list polar bears as threatened because of the loss of Arctic sea ice. A decision was due Jan. 9, one year after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing the animals as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
Polar Bears — Wait-Listed as Endangered
jane2007 submitted, created time 11 months 3 weeks (www.time.com)
As temperatures warm, the Arctic sea ice that supports the polar bear shrinks, leaving the animals to drown as they are forced to swim long distances between the ice, or simply starve to death. Without the sea ice, there is no polar bear.
Polar bears dying in years of early ice melt
whitesnow submitted, created time 1 year 1 month (www.nature.com)
A census of polar bears in Canada’s Hudson Bay has lent some hard numbers to the long-held fear that retreating sea ice is causing some bears to starve or drown.
