Diabetes is associated with larger retinal arteriolar calibre and retinopathy with larger retinal venular calibre. The contrasting associations may reflect different underlying pathophysiological processes in the natural history of diabetes.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids protect against the development and progression of retinopathy, a deterioration of the retina, in mice. This is the major finding of a study that appears in the July 2007 issue of the journal Nature Medicine.

Eye disease in diabetics tied to risk of dying

In adults with type 2 diabetes, a common diabetes-related complication of the eye called retinopathy is associated with an increased risk of dying within in a given period of time, a study shows.

Retinopathy arises when diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It can lead to blurred vision and blindness if unchecked. In women, proliferative retinopathy was associated with a 2.9-fold increased risk of death from all causes
