SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Federal wildlife officials on Tuesday proposed more protection for the threatened California red-legged frog, providing up to four times as much habitat than was set aside two years ago.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommends designating up to 1.8 million acres in twenty-eight California counties as habitat critical to the frog's survival. The proposal must undergo sixty days of public comment and another review before it becomes final.
The designation would require any development project on the land to get prior approval from federal wildlife officials

Three conservation groups sued the Department of the Interior on Monday for missing a deadline on a decision to list polar bears as threatened because of the loss of Arctic sea ice. A decision was due Jan. 9, one year after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing the animals as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Smithsonian scientists working to save microscopic threatened species

The Smithsonian's National Zoo recently acquired 12,000 new animals -- microscopic Elkhorn coral larvae harvested by National Zoo scientists in Puerto Rico -- as part of an international collaborative program to raise the threatened species. National Zoo scientists hope to one day return the animals, once they are grown, to their wild ocean habitat.
