The von Hippel–Lindau tumor suppressor protein: O2 sensing and cancer

sea-maid submitted, created time 4 weeks 1 day (www.nature.com)

The von Hippel–Lindau disease is caused by inactivating germline mutations of the VHL tumor suppressor gene and is associated with an increased risk of a variety of tumours in an allele-specific manner. The role of the heterodimeric transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) in the pathogenesis of VHL-defective tumors has been more firmly established during the past five years

Hmga directs tumor suppressors in stem cell aging

jerry submitted, created time 1 month 2 days (www.cell.com)

Stem cells persist throughout life in diverse tissues by undergoing self-renewing divisions. Self-renewal capacity declines with age, partly because of increasing expression of the tumor suppressor p16Ink4a. We discovered that the Hmga2 transcriptional regulator is highly expressed in fetal neural stem cells but that expression declines with age. This decrease is partly caused by the increasing expression of let-7b microRNA, which is known to target HMGA2

Original CIN: reviewing roles for APC in chromosome instability

kavin submitted, created time 5 months 6 days (www.jcb.org)

You may have seen the bumper sticker "Eve was framed." Thousands of years of being blamed for original sin and still many wonder, where's the evidence? Today, the tumor suppressor adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) may have the same complaint about accusations of a different type of CIN, chromosome instability. A series of recent papers, including three in this journal, propose that loss of APC function plays an important role in the CIN seen in many colon cancer cells. However, a closer look reveals a complex story that raises more questions than answers.

MicroRNAs can be tumor suppressors

fiona submitted, created time 1 year 6 months (www.biologynews.net)

"University of Virginia researchers have discovered that microRNAs, a form of genetic material, can function as tumor suppressors in laboratory studies. "

MicroRNAs As Tumor Suppressors

cappuccion submitted, created time 1 year 7 months (www.medicalnewstoday.com)

"Overexpression of HMGA2 is an important feature of many medically important tumors like uterine fibroids. It is very exciting to realize that microRNAs have an important role in suppressing the overexpression of HMGA2, and so may have a role in the causation and perhaps the cure of a disease that is responsible for the vast majority of hysterectomies in the Western world."
