Combining ability and heterosis under pest epidemics in a broad-based global wheat-breeding population

kavin submitted, created time 5 months 2 weeks (web.ebscohost.com)

This experiment was undertaken to assess the advantages of using diallel crosses to define combining ability and understand heterosis in a broad-based wheat-breeding population across different environments affected by yellow rust. This research shows the power of available quantitative breeding tools to help breeders choose parental sources in a population improvement programme.

New Enzyme founded to provide transgenic resistance to FHB

Sue Wu submitted, created time 10 months 6 days (www.jbc.org)

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a serious plant disease caused by fungal species belonging to the genus Fusarium. Shown here is the structure of trichothecene 3-O-acetyltransferase from F. graminearum complexed with deoxynivalenol superimposed onto an infected wheat head. This enzyme has promise for providing transgenic resistance to FHB.

$500 million for plant-based fuel research facility at UC Berkeley

Darkfrog submitted, created time 1 year 9 months (sciencenow.sciencemag.org)

British Petroleum is funding a $500 million research facility. UC B beat out some other contenders for the honor. I'm a bit skeptical about biofuels, myself, but put enough top botanists in one building and they're bound to come up with something useful. A cure for the wheat rust that's about to invade China might be nice.
